v28.7: One Step At A Time

Good morning folks,

-slurp-

The mind is truely an amazing thing and a terrible thing to waste.  Using nothing but our minds we are able to trick our bodies into thinking we are somewhere else or create an alternate reality whenever we feel like it.  The mind can also be a dangerous thing because it sometimes causes us to dream up "realities" that are not real which can cause stress and anxiety.

Too many times we get ahead of ourselves and ponder too much on the future.  I am reminded of a line from Star Wars where Obi Wan is talking with Qui-gon and Obi Wan makes a statement about Master Yoda telling him to always be mindful of the future which Qui-gon immediately replies with, "But not at the expense of the present".  This is true in our daily lives; thinking on the future is fine provided it does not cause you to lose focus on the present events.

I seem to always be dwelling on things which are out of my control.  I am constantly worried about what the future will bring for my family and whether we will be able to weather the storm.  That feeling of worry causes us to be more cautious in our daily lives.  As a parent, this is very difficult to do especially when you want your children to always be safe from harm.  At the end of the day your job as a parent is to prepare the child for the future and hope you did a good job.

You have heard the speech many times and have probably given it many times; take life one step at a time.  The goal here isn't making it to the end, the goal is to make that next step in life.  Don't focus down the road as you're more likely to trip along the way.  Instead, set your goal down the road and then look down at the path you're on.  Take it one step at a time by planning each move carefully; keeping in mind the ultimate destination (goal).  Imagine yourself walking down a long road full of debris and hazards.  Those debris and hazards represent Life Issues and the end of the road represents your goals in life.  If you never look down and watch where you're going and only fix your eyes on the end goal, you will trip and fall many times until you stop and look down and take it one step at a time.

Life is full of pitfalls and traps that always catch us unaware.  I won't say you will avoid all of them but if you stop and take the time to watch where you're going, you'll run into a lot less of them and hopefully achieve your goal sooner.

Well folks, I need to run and get some work done.  This topic has been on my mind for most of the weekend and I've been trying to write it for a couple days.  I too have had my eyes fixed on the end goal and haven't been watching where I was going and it is time to take a few steps back and hopefully get the opportunity for a "do-over".

Until next time.

Cheers,

Al

  1. I think that musing there speaks to everyone's heart, Al. I'm glad you decided to write about that since people (including myself) get caught up in the end goal and end up screwing a lot of things up in present events that occur on a daily basis - only because we're so focused on that end goal it seems to get further and further out of our reach because we aren't paying attention to that 'road of debris', as you called it. I think writing things down as you go and getting it out and re-reading things helps the important things stick to you enough so that it can influence your actions eventually and then become your way of life on a daily basis to help you with a broader sight along that rough road.
